Bio

Julie Kindt is a self-taught Metal Artist who lives and works in West Central Wisconsin.  Her
metalwork, sculptures and recycled art are created using industrial steel scrap, recycled
metal and found objects.

Artist Statement

Discarded metal is the foundation for all that I make.  The material for my steel sculpture
comes directly from the industrial scrap heap.  Flea markets and recycle bins alike offer up
fodder for my recycled art.  I thrive in the re-use environment.

Inspiration comes from my interests in ancient armour, myths and primitive symbols.  The
concept for each piece starts as a spark in my imagination and moves forward from there.
The metal guides me during the creation process evolving into the final piece.

Steel Sculpture
The Steel Sculptures are made from industrial scrap metal.  Lots of pounding and grinding is
usually necessary.  So to be sure there is hard work involved before the welding even starts.
This makes the sculpture journey that much more satisfying in the end.
Maille
I make my maille entirely from scratch.  I wind the steel wire on a mandrel, cut each link by
hand and assemble the piece using a plier in each hand.  I make what is called butted
maille.  This means the ring is closed by lining up the ends of the link one against the
other. The ends of each link usually forming a double sideways V at the closure.  I then
feel each closure to be sure it is totally smooth and closed.
Primitive
My Primitive pieces may typically be incorporated with non-metal materials.  The earth and
animals offer up all sorts of beautiful inspiring materials.
Jewelry
Most of my Jewelry pieces are done in maille weaves.  Closures for the necklaces and
bracelets are handcrafted using wire and pliers.  Some are standard armour weave and
others are intricate modernized weaves.
Recycled
The Recycled section shows my fondness for the re-use of recyclable and found
materials.  These pieces are not only made from throw-away stuff but are functional as
well.
Crafty
Crafty is what it says.  More-so craft, than art.  Things that don't really fit into my other
categories.  These are usable and decorative items.
